Mold, Sick Building and Construction Defect Alert

Here are reports from California, Illinois, Texas, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Connecticut, Florida and Arkansas. Mold woes from summer humidity continue to torture school districts.

Illinois:

A family is forced to move from their dream home, the first and only house the husband and wife had owned in their 40-year marriage, when they discover it's loaded with mold. "There was five feet of mold growing up behind my bed. At that point I got really nervous. Mold was growing on all the furniture, in my closet, up the walls"...reported in the The Journal Standard.

California:

The homes of many residents of the Solera Homes development have moved because their new homes are infested with mold — a byproduct of the winter rains.A subcontractor for the developer will clean the mold and then another subcontractor is brought in to re-install home furnishing, insulation and sections of walls and ceilings reports the Daily Press.

Texas:

Brazosport High School’s band hall is undergoing mold remediation after the fungus was found growing on furniture, books and walls reports The Facts.com

Pennsylvania:

The Trinity Area School Board approved a contract to encapsulate mold on the heating/ventilation/air conditioning piping at two schools and air monitoring during the school year. The Board eventually remove and replace the piping insulation that caused the problem. A number of parents protested the Board's decision reports the Observer Reporter.

South Carolina:

The Florence School District is taking an eclectic approach to mold clean up in classrooms and the media center of an elementary school. A 25 person cleaning crews has been at work, 19,000books have been cleaned and carpet is being replaced with tile. The school board is considering a consultant's recommendation for replacement of the existing 10-ton heat pump unit with two new five-ton units and to further replace all the duct board with new insulated, galvanized steel ductwork including new air devices reports WBTW 13.

Connecticut:

A state subcontractor was ordered to pay $500,000 to the United States government after it pled guilty to lying about the use of steel reinforcements on a major highway project. The subcontractor acknowledged that it stated falsely on documents submitted to government officials that its concrete catch basins and other drainage components used on Interstate 95 had sufficient steel reinforcements reports the Boston Globe

Florida:

Black mold is growing inside the Nassau County Courthouse and it may take more than $100,000 to fix. Built in 1892, the historic courthouse was extensively renovated four years ago at a cost of about $4 million. But problems with water intrusion have occurred since the renovation was completed reports The News Leader.

Arkansas:

Springdale's planning department has become an issue in a lawsuit over a Springdale apartment complex even though the city is not a party to the lawsuit. The Springdale Ridge Apartments were evacuated after a carbon monoxide problem was discovered in August 2004. The contractor that built the complex contends the city may have been negligent when it approved plans for the complex which resulted in contstruction defects and when city claims inspectors approved work and issued a certificate of occupancy. The contractor wants the city assessed a percentage of damages and any verdict against the contractor reduced by that amount reports the Morning News.
